The
Ad-Hoc Committee on Sweatshop Labor (Posted
2/28/2000)
On the Importance of the Campus-wide
Committee Process in Regard to the Ad-Hoc Committee on Sweatshop
Labor: After Almanac went to press today with
the February
15 issue, the following statement was issued by President
Judith Rodin:
"As I said to the members of Penn Students Against
Sweatshops, as I have continued to deepen my understanding
of the Fair Labor Association and the Worker Rights Consortium,
I have developed some serious questions about the FLA and
a growing interest in the WRC," said President Judith
Rodin. "However, as I said to the students this morning,
I still need to hear the views of the Ad-Hoc Committee on
Sweatshop Labor. I again asked the students to engage the
committee and to allow its members to discuss fully which
organization or organizations Penn should join. Once Penn
Students Against Sweatshops came to University Council with
their concerns in December, they initiated a campus-wide
committee process. They now need to allow that committee
to have its voice. It is important to me and it is important
to the University community." (Posted
