Penn’s New Provost: University of Toronto Law Dean Ronald Daniels

R. Daniels

President Amy Gutmann announced yesterday the selection of Ronald J. Daniels, currently Dean of the Faculty of Law and the James M. Tory Professor of Law at the University of Toronto, to become Penn’s 28th Provost. Dr. Gutmann said, “Professor Daniels is an eminent legal scholar and a dynamic and judicious academic leader who will be an exceptional partner with me, the deans and senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students to lead the University in the years ahead.”

As Dean, “Ron Daniels has realized a vision of a dynamic academic community driven by increased student access, robust community engagement, a heightened global perspective, and the generation of added resources. He has expanded the school’s faculty and increased its endowment exponentially. Working closely with the faculty, he implemented a review and reform of the academic program, including undergraduate and graduate curricula, student services, financial aid, and faculty research standards. He has also supported pro bono service in the legal profession as founder and chair of Pro Bono Students Canada. He is a co-founder of International Lawyers and Economists Against Poverty and created Canada’s first international human rights clinic,” added Dr. Gutmann.

“He has dramatically increased the law school’s engagement with the rest of the university, collaborating across school and disciplinary boundaries, and internationalized his school’s perspectives and programs. He is widely admired as a gifted, highly analytical, hardworking, enthusiastic, and collaborative academic leader,” Dr. Gutmann said.

After receiving his B.A. (1982) and LL.B. (1986) degrees from the University of Toronto, where he was Editor in Chief of the Law Review, and his LL.M. (1988) degree from Yale, he returned to Toronto, where he has been a member of the law faculty since 1988, becoming Dean in 1995. In 1993, he was the John M. Olin Visiting Fellow at Cornell Law School. An authority on corporate governance and decision making, he is the author or editor of five books or edited journal conference volumes, including most recently The Security of Freedom, which is based on papers presented at a conference he organized in the wake of 9/11 to consider proposed anti-terrorism legislation in Canada. He has written some 40 articles, chapters, monographs, and policy reports.

As a member of the law faculty at Toronto, he chaired the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy and the State and Market Project, was director and co-founder of the Joint LL.B.-M.B.A. Program, co-director and co-founder of the Public Interest Advocacy Programme, chair of the University’s Physical Planning and Design Advisory Committee, chair of the Task Force on Intellectual Property Relating to Instructional Media, special advisor to the Provincial Government on Reform of Accounting Standards, chair of the Ontario Government Task Force on Securities Regulation, and chair of the Ontario Panel on the Future of Government.

President Gutmann said that her selection of Mr. Daniels as Penn’s next Provost concludes an international search in which the Consultative Committee, ably chaired by Dean Arthur Rubenstein, conducted dozens of informational interviews with individuals and groups in the Penn community to understand the scope, expectations, and challenges of the Provost position and considered more than 100 individuals for the position.

Mr. Daniels will arrive on campus in mid-May to begin the process of transition and formally assume office on July 1, 2005, after the University’s Trustees approve his nomination at their June meeting.

“During this past year, Peter Conn has been a terrific Interim Provost. I am extraordinarily grateful to him for his unwavering support during my first year as President. The entire Penn family owes Peter a debt of gratitude,” said Dr. Gutmann.
