PENN'S FREE MODEM POOL IS GOING AWAY

ONLY 3 BUSINESS DAYS LEFT

PPP Modem Pool Decommissioned as of August 1

This is a reminder that ISC will begin decommissioning its PPP modem pool starting August 1, 2000.

If you continue to try to dial in to this number (215/573-4777) after 8/1, you will receive an authentication failure message unless you have signed up for the temporary Penn for-fee service.

IF YOU DO NOTHING, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL OR LOG ON TO THE INTERNET UNLESS YOU DIAL IN THROUGH THE 15 MIN. EXPRESS POOL (215) 573-9773.

The Penn For-Fee Service is going away on June 30, 2001. It has time limits. It is slower and it is more costly. We strongly encourage you NOT to register for it, but to use this opportunity to sign up for an account with a commercial Internet Service Provider.

Here are some frequently asked questions that may be useful:

Q. I've heard that something's happening to the Penn Modem Pool soon. But, I don't have to do anything-I can still get my email from home, right?

A. WRONG! To read email you need to log on to the Internet. If you DO NOT sign up with either a Penn-preferred commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) or the Penn For-Fee Modem Service, you WILL NOT be able to read email from home as you used to.

So, sign up now (before it's too late)! To avoid long-distance charges, pick an ISP that serves your area:

AT&T Link No Longer Available (Internet access in the Tri-State area and around the world)
DCANet http://upenn.dca.net (Internet access in the Tri-State area only)
Quadnet http://www.quadnet.net/ (Internet access in Phila. and suburbs)
Penn For-Fee Service  http://www.upenn.edu/computing/remote/ (Internet access in Phila. - only cost-effective for users in 215 area code)

Q. If I already have Internet service through AOL (or any commercial ISP), do I need to sign up with DCANet?

A. NO. If you already have remote Internet service through any commercial ISP (AOL, AltaVista, Bluelight, Earthlink, etc) you DO NOT need to sign up for the Penn service or with DCANet to get your Penn email.

Q. I want to keep my Penn email account (e.g, jdoe@dolphin.upenn.edu) so I have to sign up for the Penn For-Fee service, right?

A. WRONG. No matter which Internet Service Provider you sign up with (DCANet, AT&T, Yahoo, AOL, etc), you will maintain your Penn email account(s) as long as you are a Penn faculty or staff member or a Penn student.

Q. How do I access my Penn email using a commercial ISP?

A. To access your Penn email from any outside ISP, you simply have to connect to the Internet via the ISP (DCANet, AOL, AT&T, etc) and then run the same mail client (Eudora, Netscape, etc.) you now use to check your Penn email account. You will probably have change one setting for your email client before you try to access your Penn e-mail from an ISP for the first time.

Individuals with email accounts on Pobox, Dolphin, Mail.sas, Mail.med, and Eniac will need to follow the directions at http://www.upenn.edu/computing/provider/smtp-auth.html.

Individuals with email accounts on other campus mail servers (that do not have SMTP Authentication deployed on them), will need to use their ISPs SMTP mail address. For more details, see http://www.upenn.edu/computing/email/isp_servers.html.

Q. How do I sign up for the Penn For-Fee service?

A. To sign up for the Penn For-Fee service, go to http://www.upenn.edu/computing/remote/.

Q. I want to sign up for the Penn Express Pool. How do I do that?

A. The 15 minute Express Pool continues as a free service. There is no need to sign up for it. To use the Express Pool, you just have dial up 215/573-9773 rather than 215/573-4777.

Q. Help! I'm totally confused about these changes... What do I do?

A. First, the website http://www.upenn.edu/computing/remote/ and the FAQs at http://www.upenn.edu/computing/remote/faq.html might have many of the answers you need. If you cannot find help there, you should contact your Local Support Provider. If you're not sure who that is, please see http://www.upenn.edu/computing/remote/ or call First Call 215-573-4778.
