11/20/01, Missing Grad Student Found Dead

The body of missing Penn graduate student Anirban Majumdar was found Sunday in the Schuylkill River; the Medical Examiners office has determined cause of death to be drowning.

"It is with deep sadness that we report that the body of missing Penn graduate student Anirban Majumdar was found over the weekend," said Phyllis Holtzman, Deputy Director of University Communications. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner's office has concluded that the cause of death is drowning. The manner of death is undetermined pending the results of toxicology tests. The Medical Examiner's office reports that post- mortem exams show no evidence of trauma or foul play. Penn's Division of Public Safety has been informed that it may take up to 3-4 weeks before results of the toxicology tests are known.

"This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to Anirban's family and friends. We understand how difficult it is to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young and promising life. We want everyone to know that counselors are available to meet with those who may need assistance in dealing with this tragedy," continued Ms. Holtzman.
