New Construction Ahead:
Pending city approval, Penn plans to build a multi-use complex on the
Redevelopment Authority land now used for commercial parking at 34th &
Chestnut, EVP John Fry announced Wednesday to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Projected are classrooms, labs and some short-term housing, plus retail
space and a parking garage for nearly 800 vehicles. Like the Penn-owned
Sheraton Hotel next door, it would be low on the Chestnut Street side (five
stories), then rise to 19 floors. Total projected cost is $111 million.
New ICA Director:
Claudia Gould, now exectuive director of a New York alternative
gallery called Artists Space, will take office in September as director
of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Penn. She succeeds Patrick T.
Murphy, who headed the ICA for nine years before returning to his native
Dublin as director of exhibitions for the Royal Hibernian Academy.
