The Lost--and Rediscovered--Tomb of Tutankhamun's Treasurer
is Subject of a Talk by Renowned Egyptologist Dr. Geoffrey Martin

Dr. Geoffrey Martin, Edwards Professor of Egyptology, Emeritus, University of London, visits the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Saturday, June 19, 2 p.m., when he offers a public lecture, "The Lost Tomb of Tutankhamun's Treasurer." The slide lecture will be held in the Rainey Auditorium, and a book signing will follow. Tickets to the lecture (which includes Museum admission donation) are $8; $5 for Museum members.
In 1843, the great German archaeologist Lepsius visited the tomb of Tutankhamun's treasurer, Maya, at Saqqara in Egypt, and his draftsman recorded its beautiful reliefs. In the succeeding decades, however, this important tomb was lost. After more than a century of speculation on the whereabouts of Maya's tomb and the secrets it might reveal, it was rediscovered in 1986 by a joint Dutch-Anglo expedition led by Dr. Martin. One of the most exciting revelations came upon the exploration of the burial chamber. Although smashed by early tomb robbers, when reassembled the reliefs in these rooms were nearly complete. The result is a spectacular monument from the time of Tutankhamun.
