Winterfest at Sansom Common

Celebrate Every Thursday Night through December 28

The holidays are here and Sansom Common, one of Philadelphia's premier shopping and dining districts located in the heart of the University, is prepared to celebrate with WinterFest, which includes five weeks worth of entertainment, shopping, and dining.

Sansom Common, located from 34th to 38th and between Walnut and Chestnut Streets, is filled with an abundance of retail shops and restaurant offerings. On Thursday evenings between November 30 (see November 21 issue) and December 28, the streets will come alive between 5 and 8 p.m. with live musicians and street carolers filling the night air with festive music, and retail shops showing-off ornately decorated window displays. Other highlights include rock-climbing demonstrations at Eastern Mountain Sports, free holiday gift-wrapping on any purchase from any merchant at the Penn Bookstore, and free admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art.

And what would the holidays be without food? Some of the city's best culinary artists will show off their skills through ice carving demonstrations, and a collection of specialty gingerbread houses, along with cooking demonstrations. In addition, the various retailers will distribute free seasonal snacks, such as cookies and hot cider to those shopping and strolling during the event. On each of the evenings, the Sheraton Hotel will offer free coffee at 36th and Chestnut Streets.
