Nikon Small World Exhibition - Wistar
The Wistar exhibit on display from January 19-March 4 with a reception and talk on January 15 gives a glimpse into a world that most have never seen. See Exhibits.

1st Place: Ralph Claus Grimm: eye of a honey bee (Apis mellifera) covered in dandelion pollen (120x): Reflected Light.

3rd Place: Dr. Igor Siwanowicz: intake of a humped bladderwort (Utricularia gibba), a freshwater carnivorous plant (100x): Confocal.
11th Place: Rogelio Moreno Gill: fern sorus at varying levels of maturity (20x): Fluorescence, Image Stacking.

 

Twelfth Night: Filter Theatre & Royal Shakespeare Company

On February 9-13, watch Twelfth Night: Filter Theatre & Royal Shakespeare Company at Annenberg Center. Two worlds collide in the explosive new take on Shakespeare’s play, pairing verse with a riotous gig in this radically cut and fast-paced story of romance, satire and mistaken identity.See Children’s Activities & On Stage.

 

Ballet Hispanico
Ballet Hispanico (above) is the new expression of American contemporary dance. “One of the best contemporary repertory ensembles” (New York Times), Ballet Hispanico fuses its Latin roots with an eclectic, sleekly modern style. Theatricality and passion propel every move. This production will feature an INSIGHTS event at the Annenberg Center. There is a Friday morning performance that is part of the Arts4Youth Series. Seashells to City Gardens – Watercolors by Lauren Sweeney – Burrison

Seashells to City Gardens–Watercolors by Lauren Sweeney is on display at Burrison Gallery through February 26. Lauren Sweeney has had a life-long interest in art and biology. A lifetime of scientific observation underpins her interest in capturing the essence of her subjects, which range from still life to interior scenes, streetscapes and seascapes. In most of these compositions, she focuses on glimpses of scenes to capture the essence of the larger scene. See Exhibits.

 

  A Beautiful Ghetto
A Beautiful Ghetto, a visual portrayal by Devin Allen of Freddie Gray’s Baltimore and the rise of the New Activist, on display at Slought. The project aspires to create an inclusive forum for conversation about the struggle for social justice. It is on display through February. See Exhibits.

 

The Golden Age of King Midas
The Golden Age of King Midas will be on display at the Penn Museum from February 12-November 27 with an opening celebration on February 13 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. See Exhibits & Special Events. (below) Camels travel a dirt path at the site of Gordion in central Turkey, a crossroads of many cultures over the course of four millennia. Prominent in the distance is Tumulus MM, the burial mound of a Phrygian ruler who was probably father to King Midas. See Children’s Activities, Music & Special Events.

 

Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere

On February 3-March 27, Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere, an exhibition incorporating popular music and radio is on display at ICA with an opening celebration on February 3. Their projects traverse the cultural complications and contradictions at play within public spaces. See Exhibits.

Rodney McMillian: The Black Show
On February 3-August 14Rodney McMillian: The Black Show, an extended physical meditation on the United States – sculpture, paintings, room-size constructions, videos and performances that embody our social fabric is on display at ICA with an opening celebration on February 3. See Exhibits.

 

Methods of Collection
On February 11-March 25, Methods of Collection, a group exhibition inspired by the practice of collecting zoological samples and animal specimens is on display at Esther Klein Gallery with an opening reception on February 11 from 5-7:30 p.m. See Exhibits.

He created a site-specific stick sculpture, gaining inspiration from the garden at the Morris Arboretum. This exhibit will be on display until deterioration.

Now through through February 15, 2016, Victorious Secret: Entertaining Notions of Elite Ideals for Women 300 AD is on display at the Education Commons in Franklin Field. The exhibit displays mosaic panels of women athletes from Roman times, based on originals in Piazza Armerina, Sicily. See Exhibits.

Celebration of African Cultures

On February 27, the Celebration of African Cultures at the Penn Museum brings traditional storytelling, electrifying African dance (such as Universal Dance & Drum Ensemble, from Camden, New Jersey), musical performances, workshops, children’s activities, gallery tours and an African marketplace from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. See Special Events.

Kariye Camii in Istanbul, Turkey. Sacred Spaces: The Photography of Ahmet Ertug is open at the Penn Museum. The splendor of Byzantine Christian art—preserved through the ages in early Christian churches in both Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and the Cappadocia region of Turkey—is the focus of this expanded, large-scale photography exhibition. At Native American Voices: The People—Here and Now, a new long-term interactive exhibition at the Penn Museum, visitors will learn about contemporary issues in Native America. Set against the backdrop of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s expansive collections from the United States and Canada, the exhibition challenges stereotypes and tells powerful stories of Native American successes in achieving independence as sovereign, self-governing Nations. At multimedia stations, visitors will experience audio and video clips of contemporary Native Americans speaking of the many ways in which they maintain their religious, political, linguistic and artistic independence. AUDOBON'S BIRDS OF AMERICA

This permanent exhibit at Van Pelt-Diectrich Library is devoted to the display of John James Audubon's Birds of America (1827-38). Penn's double elephant folio set of the Birds was a gift by Edwin H.
