An ancient clay tablet in Sumerian cuneiform from the site of Nippur in Mesopotamia (now in Iraq), circa 1650 BCE, contains the earliest version of the Mesopotamian flood story. A version of this tale becomes incorporated into the Epic of Gilgamesh, and tells of a flood that destroyed humankind—the story closely parallels the biblical story of Noah. This world-renowned sculpture, named “Ram Caught in a Thicket” in reference to the Biblical story of Abraham by excavator Sir Leonard Wooley, is crafted of gold, lapis lazuli, copper, shell, red limestone, and bitumen. Circa 2600-2500 BCE, found at the Royal Cemetery at Ur in what is now southern Iraq, this artifact is on view in Iraq’s Ancient Past: Rediscovering Ur’s Royal Cemetery. At Native American Voices: The People—Here and Now, a new long-term interactive exhibition at the Penn Museum, visitors will learn about contemporary issues in Native America. Set against the backdrop of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s expansive collections from the United States and Canada, the exhibition challenges stereotypes and tells powerful stories of Native American successes in achieving independence as sovereign, self-governing Nations. At multimedia stations, visitors will experience audio and video clips of contemporary Native Americans speaking of the many ways in which they maintain their religious, political, linguistic and artistic independence.
