Penn-Made President: Dr. Ahlburg
Trinity University has named Dr. Dennis Ahlburg as its next president. Dr. Ahlburg earned his PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979 and currently serves as dean of the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Ahlburg begins his new post on January 1, 2010.
WOAR Honors: Dr. Brown
Dr. Kathleen Brown, practice assistant professor of nursing, was honored last month by WOAR (Women Organized Against Rape) at their annual event, “The Bridge of Courage Fundraiser.” Dr. Brown, a nurse consultant to CHOP, designed “a nursing response to hands-on sex crimes in Philadelphia” and has been training nurses to collect forensic evidence from victims of sexual assault at the School of Nursing since 1995. Due to her efforts, Philadelphia has three teams of nurses who collect evidence from adult victims of sexual assault.
APNA Award: Dr. Hanrahan
Dr. Nancy P. Hanrahan, Lenore H. Kurlowicz Term Assistant Professor of Nursing, has been selected to receive the Award for Excellence in Leadership-Advanced from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Dr. Hanrahan’s research involves examining the extent to which organizational traits of patient care environments and nurse staffing are associated with patient outcomes. She envisions her program of research contributing to defining optimal healing environments for people who need mental health care and the staff who work in these environments.
World Energy Panel: Dr. Lior
Dr. Noam Lior, professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics in SEAS, was the coordinator and chair of the “World Energy Panel” composed of seven leading energy experts from South and North America, the European Union, China, India and Japan, which surveyed the world energy situation and its environmental, economic and social impacts and offered directions and predictions for the future, at ECOS 2009: The 22nd International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems in Brazil. Dr. Lior also presented the introductory talk, Sustainable energy development: A brief introduction to the present (2009) situation.
Internal Medicine Board: Dr. Shannon
Dr. Richard P. Shannon, the Frank Wister Thomas Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine, the organization that sets standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties. Dr. Shannon also serves as chairman of the department of medicine in the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
Beccaria Gold Medal: Dr. Sherman
Dr. Lawrence W. Sherman, director of the Jerry Lee Center for Criminology and professor of criminology, was honored with the Beccaria Gold Medal of the German Society of Criminology. The medal is named after an 18th century founder of criminology, Cesare Beccaria.
New Scholar Award: Dr. Shorter
Dr. James Shorter, assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the School of Medicine, is a recipient of a 2009 Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar Award in Aging. The award provides support for newly independent investigators, beginning in their first three years after their postdoctoral training. It also provides funding up to $100,000 per year for a four-year period to a maximum of 25 scholars. Dr. Shorter studies how baker’s yeast can be applied to the study of such lethal nerve degeneration disorders as Alzheimer’s disease.
Reviewer of the Year: Dr. Tulman
Dr. Lorraine Tulman, associate professor of nursing, has been named “Reviewer of the Year” by the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing, the official research and clinical journal of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. She has been a reviewer for years and most recently completed a term on the journal’s editorial board. She also serves as the chair of the graduate group in nursing.
