Women's Studies: Paula England
Dr. Paula England, professor
of sociology, has been named the Director of the Women's Studies Program
and the Alice Paul Research Center.
She is working to increase external funding to the Alice Paul Center. One focus of the APC will be academic research on women and gender. A second focus will be policy partnerships, where APC partners with a policy making or advocacy organization and APC provides summaries of relevant research. It will be combined with service learning courses to involve undergraduates in policy-relevant research. A second goal is to have more courses on gender.
Dr. England received her B.A. from Whitman College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on gender inequality in labor markets and on changing roles of men and women in the family. She is the author of two books, Households, Employment, and Gender (with George Farkas, 1986, Aldine) and Comparable Worth: Theories and Evidence (1992, Aldine), and editor of two anthologies. She is also the author of many journal articles. She has testified as an expert witness in a number of Title VII discrimination cases. In 1999, she was awarded the Jessie Bernard Award by the American Sociological Association for career contributions to scholarship on gender. From 1994-96 she served as the editor of the American Sociological Review, and from 1997-2000 was an elected member of the American Sociological Association's Council, its governing body.
