Tales of Three Texts: The Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew Medical Texts in UPenn MS Codex 1649

Professor Y. Tzvi Langermann will present his latest research on a 15th-century medical miscellany (UPenn MS Codex 1649) as part of Tales of Three Texts: The Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew Medical Texts in UPenn MS Codex 1649 on September 3. Produced in Sicily, the manuscript contains texts written in Judaeo-Arabic, Hebrew and Arabic, making it a fascinating witness to the cross-fertilization of ideas across borders and cultures in the history of medicine in the late Middle Ages. Beneath the Surface: Life, Death and Gold in Ancient Panama-Penn Museum

On February 7-November 1, Beneath the Surface: Life, Death and Gold in Ancient Panama will be on display at the Penn Museum. It will include spectacular finds at the Pre-Columbian cemetery of Sitio Conte in central Panama shed light on a mysterious and complex society that thrived there more than 1,000 years ago. Summer Nights Concert on Wednesday, September 2 in the Penn Museum’s outdoor courtyard space. An ancient clay tablet in Sumerian cuneiform from the site of Nippur in Mesopotamia (now in Iraq), circa 1650 BCE, contains the earliest version of the Mesopotamian flood story.  A version of this tale becomes incorporated into the Epic of Gilgamesh, and tells of a flood that destroyed humankind—the story closely parallels the biblical story of Noah. This is one of ten extraordinary pieces on short-term display in the special exhibition, Sacred Writings: Extraordinary Texts of the Biblical World.Photo: Penn Museum.

This world-renowned sculpture, named “Ram Caught in a Thicket” in reference to the Biblical story of Abraham by excavator Sir Leonard Wooley, is crafted of gold, lapis lazuli, copper, shell, red limestone, and bitumen. Circa 2600­-2500 BCE, found at the Royal Cemetery at Ur in what is now southern Iraq, this artifact is on view in Iraq’s Ancient Past: Rediscovering Ur’s Royal Cemetery. Karanlik Kilise (Dark Church) located in Turkey, Capadocia, Göreme is dated to the mid-11th century CE. This photographic print by Ahmet Ertug, 2005–2006, is one of a series of large-scale photographs of Byzantine-era churches in Turkey, in the exhibition Sacred Spaces: The Photography of Ahmet Ertug. At Native American Voices: The People—Here and Now, a new long-term interactive exhibition at the Penn Museum, visitors will learn about contemporary issues in Native America. Set against the backdrop of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s expansive collections from the United States and Canada, the exhibition challenges stereotypes and tells powerful stories of Native American successes in achieving independence as sovereign, self-governing Nations. At multimedia stations, visitors will experience audio and video clips of contemporary Native Americans speaking of the many ways in which they maintain their religious, political, linguistic and artistic independence. This permanent exhibit at Van Pelt-Diectrich Library is devoted to the display of John James Audubon's Birds of America (1827-38). Penn's double elephant folio set of the Birds was a gift by Edwin H.
