The Seventh Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture in Social Justice will feature Harry Belafonte, international human rights activist and entertainer, and Dr. Mary Frances Berry, Geraldine R. Segal Professor of History and former chair of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Irvine Auditorium. Seating is limited. 

 Harry Belafonte is a Tony and Emmy Award -winning musician, actor and singer. Mr. Belafonte, a confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has dedicated his life to global civil and human rights issues, focusing primarily on the U.S. and Africa.

Dr. Mary Frances Berry has served as the Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare during the Carter administration, and is a founder of the Free South Africa Movement. Her latest book is My Face Is Black Is True: Callie House and the Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations (2006).

The lecture, sponsored by the Center for Africana Studies and the Annenberg School for Communication, will be moderated by Dr. Tukufu Zuberi, professor of sociology and director of the Center for Africana Studies.
