Street Smarts: September 17

Chicago Police Detective J.J. Bittenbinder, renowned for his his dramatic PBS TV workshops on personal safety, returns to Penn Wednesday, September 17 for a presentation in the Palestra 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. His tough-target tactics are designed to enhance people's ability to protect themselves, their property and their community, said a spokesman for the Division of Public Safety, sponsor of this second visit as well as the one given last fall. The demonstration is required for all freshmen, but is also open to all other students and to faculty, staff and Health System personnel. There is no charge for admission.


Visions of Independent Africa

All members of the University community are invited to a celebration of Penn's African Heritage to be held Friday, September 12.

The program, titled "Visions of Independent Africa," honors the distinguished South African novelist Ezekiel (Es'kia) Mphahlele, a former faculty member here; Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria; and H.E. Kwame Nkrumah, first president of Ghana. President Judith Rodin will open the program at 3:30 p.m. in Room 200 College Hall, followed by speakers Dr. Robert Lucid, Ambassador Patrick Cole, the Hon. Alassane D. Ouattara, and Dr. Francis K. Nkrumah.

A Louis Massiah film entitled W.E.B. DuBois -- A Biography in Four Voices precedes the program; it starts at 1:15 p.m., and commentary by the filmmaker will follow.


Penn Family Day: October 4

Saturday, October 4, is Penn Family Day sponsored by the Division of Human Resources and supported by the Athletics Department and the Museum. The celebration will include free admission to the Museum for Penn faculty and staff families where visitors can tour the newest exhibitions, Roman Glass and Eggi's Village. There will be a Festival of Fun in Hill Field beginning at 3 p.m. featuring interactive games, activities and entertainment. Capping the day is football: Penn vs. Towson, at 6 p.m. at Franklin Field. Admission to the game is free for faculty and staff with tickets, and $2 per ticket for family and friends. Details are to come.


25-Year Club: October 7

The 25-Year Club's 1997 dinner will be held Tuesday, October 7, in the University Museum; details are to be announced.
