All That Jazz



Live at the Annenberg Center

In A Jazz Concert Celebration of the Spirit of John Coltrane, a diverse array of jazz musicians influenced and inspired by the legendary saxophonist will perform at the Annenberg Center on June 21 in the Zellerbach Theatre at 8 p.m. The featured artists include Positively to the Point Dance Theater from the Point Breeze Performing Arts Center, tenor saxophonist Charles Gayle (at right; photo by Jimmie Jones) with AMLA's Latin Percussion Ensemble, trombonist Conrad Herwig and Tropical Fire, and Prima Materia with drummer Rashied Ali. Reel Performances at International House

June 18 through 22, followers of jazz can have it two ways. Women in Jazz--with rare footage dating back to the early 1920s, of divas including Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day (at left)--is one of the programs being presented by International House's Neighborhood Film/Video Project in collaboration with the Mellon PSFS Jazz Festival. The other is Robert Altman's Jazz '34: Remembrances of Kansas City Swing, narrated by Harry Belafonte, a modern film that captures the sound and look of the earlier era (below right) as 21 of jazz's best contemporaty musicians play in the spirit of yesterday's legends (Count Basie, for one). Tickets are $6.50, $5.50 for students, senior citizens and I-House members. Women in Jazz will be shown June 18 at 7 p.m. and June 22 at 4 p.m. Jazz '34 plays June 19 at 7 p.m., June 20 at 1 p.m., June 21 at 5 p.m. and June 22 at 6:30 p.m.
