Mike Nakkula, practice professor and chair of the Applied Psychology & Human Development Division at Penn’s Graduate School of Education, has received the 2016 GSE Excellence in Teaching Award.
This award, given annually to an outstanding member of the teaching faculty, is an honor bestowed by the GSE student body. Recipients have a strong commitment to teaching and learning and are known to challenge their students intellectually and imaginatively.
Dr. Nakkula’s teaching and research focus on the development of resilience and the promotion of possibility development among low-income children and youth. He is particularly interested in the integration of counseling, mentoring and educational processes in urban schools to create contexts that allow students to thrive in school and during their transition to higher education and career opportunities.
Described as a patient teacher, Dr. Nakkula is both eager and willing to give his students ownership of different research projects, challenging them to step out of their comfort zones and try new things. He also helped develop and actively participates in a student-led group that advocates against human trafficking.
