Provost Vincent Price and Professor Edward Rock, director of Open Learning Initiatives, announce a new call for digital learning proposals. Over the past two years, the University has produced 35 open online courses that have been streamed through our partnership with Coursera. Moving forward, the University hopes to continue to expand its open learning initiatives beyond MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) to include the development of other digital content for use in on-campus courses. The University’s experience with MOOCs and integration of other digital content into the classroom have shown that digital content has the potential to revolutionize on-campus teaching, whether part of a MOOC or not.

Faculty members from any School are invited to submit proposals for development of digital content during calendar year 2015. One option is to propose a MOOC. It may resemble or approximate an existing course or be an entirely new course. It may be taught individually or jointly with another faculty member. Faculty are also encouraged to propose other digital initiatives, including the development of video content, simulations, other forms of technology-enhanced teaching and learning methods for existing on-campus courses or anything else that faculty believe will improve the on-campus learning experience. These materials can be designed to be used during class time or as part of homework, group projects or recitations.

The Office of the Provost (in partnership with the relevant School) will provide some level of funding for the development of new content. Depending on the proposal, support may be available for expenses such as faculty preparation time, teaching assistance, recording of videos, software development, copyright licensing, equipment and production costs. This funding can be supplemented by outside grants at the discretion of the faculty member(s) or the School.

Proposals are due no later than November 7, 2014 and must be completed using the templates provided in the Resources section of the Open Learning Initiatives website: openlearning.upenn.edu/penn-resources

The Open Learning Initiative will host an Open House on October 23 from 4-5:30 p.m. in The ARCH, Room 108 to provide more information on this initiative. Faculty members, School representatives and staff experts from the Penn Libraries and the Center for Teaching and Learning will be available to demonstrate and discuss ideas with interested faculty members. Please contact Lauren Owens, lowens@upenn.edu if you would like to attend or would like more information.

The Open Learning team is also available at any time to meet with individual faculty members to discuss ideas and assist in proposal preparation. For additional information about resources, please visit: openlearning.upenn.edu, www.upenn.edu/ctl and wic.library.upenn.edu
