PennMOVES: No Sale This Year But Still Collecting

Since 2008, PennMOVES has collected approximately a half-million pounds of items, which students can’t take with them when they leave campus. The donations were then re-used in the community, first through distribution to area charities, and then through yearly sales, open to all and organized in conjunction with the United Way and beginning in 2011, Goodwill Industries. These efforts raised over $100,000 to support programs in our local community.

Through PennMOVES and Penn’s growing relationship with Goodwill, and in respect for the work that the organization does to promote job training and creation, Goodwill will be establishing a presence in West Philadelphia in the late summer/early fall of 2013. A facility at 5050 Parkside Avenue will be open for donations and retail sales. Together with their existing locations, in South Philadelphia at Front & Oregon and in Northeast Philadelphia at Bustleton & Red Lion, as well as numerous locations in Southern New Jersey, Goodwill will be better able to serve the greater Philadelphia community, and, as such, the items collected from PennMOVES will be used to stock the new facility in West Philadelphia and also be available at Goodwill’s other locations across the Delaware Valley.

Although the new process replaces the sale, collection from College Houses will begin as usual on May 2. Students who live on campus should bring their donations to the specific location designated for their campus residence. Students living off campus or in fraternity and sorority houses should bring their donations to the Goodwill truck at the Hamilton Village. Penn faculty and staff may also donate to PennMOVES. Items may be brought to any location including the two Goodwill collection bins that have been placed on campus as part of a pilot project, which if successful, will result in the bins being a permanent fixture on campus. One bin is located in under Sansom Place West and the other is outside of Rodin College House.
