The Philadelphia Science Festival— April 23-28—is in full swing. Among the series of events happening, below are taking place around the Penn campus that feature Penn departments and schools.
23 Hot, Hot, HOT: The Science of Spicy Food; representatives from the Monell Chemical Senses Center, Han Dynasty and University City Science Center will discuss what gives Han’s cuisine its signature kick and test different remedies to combat the burn… if any exist; Han Dynasty, 6-7:30 p.m.; 3711 Market St.; $20; must be at least 21 to attend.
Big Ideas: Funding and Innovation; featuring collaborators from Penn, The Franklin Institute and Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine to discuss how projects are chosen for funding from the government; 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Iron Gate Theater; Tickets $12, $10/educators with ID.
24 Long Live Our Treasures: The Science of Conservation and Preservation; learn how museums and individuals can preserve their most precious artifacts from leading researchers and conservators from around the Delaware Valley. 5-8 p.m.; Penn Museum. Tickets $6 in advance, $12 at door, $5/ educators with ID.
Don’t Burst My Bubble; explore the science of bubbles as collaborators from Penn’s Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter, Monell Chemical Senses Center and The Franklin Institute discuss how bubbles are formed, and everything else about bubbles you ever wanted to know; 6:30-8 p.m.; World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.; free.
26 Astronomy Night; how better to cap off a week of science than to star gaze? Bring your blanket as professional and amateur astronomers bring out their telescopes to explore the universe; 6-9:30 p.m.; Shoemaker Green, 33rd & Walnut St.; free.
