Graduating students assembled in Hamilton Village (at far left) prior to Commencement. Some students chose to wear rain gear over their academic regalia. The student procession—through campus, along Locust Walk, to Franklin Field—was watched by those who lined the route as well as those who viewed from their seats in the stadium or those around the world who viewed the live webcast.
The University of Pennsylvania's 256th Commencement took place on Monday, May 14 on Franklin Field, as the sun came out in spite of the predicted rain which held off for the most part, adding to the magical moment. President Amy Gutmann (above) conferred degrees to 5,858 graduates. Outstanding students' academic honors were acknowledged by Provost Vincent Price. Graduates of the Class of 2012 thanked their families and friends for their support.
The Chaplain, Rev. Charles (Chaz) Howard, (above) gave the "Invocation of Gratitude"in which he urged everyone to join him in saying "thank you" and then the Dismissal Benediction, "Lift Up," a phrase he used from the "The Red and Blue.' He implored the graduates, "Whatever you do, in whatever field you do it, use what you've learned here at Penn to lift others up."
Hannah Beren Platt, C'12, (above) sang the National Anthem, after George Weiss, vice chair of the University of Pennsylvania Board of Trustees, gave the Opening Proclamation for the 256th Commencement Ceremony to begin.
The Penn Glee Club—celebrating its 150th anniversary this year (AlmanacFebruary 14, 2012)—led the singing of The Red and Blue (below right). Outstanding students' academic honors were acknowledged by Provost Vincent Price. Graduates of the Class of 2012 thanked their families and friends for their support.
When a shark suddenly emerged above the sea of graduates, it was as if one heard the late Maurice Sendak's Max proclaim, "let the wild rumpus start." Mr. Sendak received an honorary degree from Penn in 1998 (Almanac March 31, 1998).

The jumbotron provided closed captioning of speeches, and close-ups of the student leaders and other outstanding members of Penn's Class of 2012.
