Ted Abel has been named the Brush Family Professor of Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Abel is also co-director of the Biological Basis of Behavior Program and directs an NIMH-funded predoctoral training program in behavioral and cognitive neuroscience. He has received numerous awards, including the SAS Dean’s Award for Mentorship of Undergraduate Research.
His laboratory’s primary focus is on understanding the molecular and cellular basis of learning and memory. Using mouse models, Dr. Abel seeks to identify novel therapeutic approaches to treat cognitive deficits associated with many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. He has published widely in journals that include Nature, Neuron, and Journal of Neuroscience. He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and an associate editor of the journal Behavioral Neuroscience.
A graduate of Swarthmore, Dr. Abel received his master’s of philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and his doctorate from Harvard. After a postdoctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel at Columbia, he came to Penn in 1998. He has served as a member of the executive committee for the College of Liberal & Professional Studies and is currently serving on the executive committee for the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences.
The Brush Family Professorship was established with a gift from David M. Brush and Karen Clark Brush. Both are alumni of the University and wanted to convey their passion for a liberal arts education by creating the Brush Family Professorship in SAS. Mr. Brush remains actively engaged with Penn. He is a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, an SAS Overseer and a member of the Athletic Board of Overseers.
