Lori Doyle has decided to step down from her position as Vice President for University Communications as of January 31, 2011. She is joining Drexel University as Senior Vice President, University Communications.

As Penn’s Vice President for University Communications for the past ten years, Ms. Doyle has served as the University’s principal spokesperson and strategist for effectively communicating Penn’s goals and accomplishments, including those of its faculty, students, and staff.

“Lori’s decade of achievement has been defined by collaborative leadership, unflagging adaptability, and diverse expertise,” said Penn President Amy Gutmann. “She has been a key figure in communicating Penn’s eminence by sharing the successes of our 12 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools with constituencies across the country and around the world.”

“Respected by her peers throughout the higher education community, Lori has proactively managed our media relations, advanced the University’s visibility, and enhanced Penn’s presence on the web by adopting new technologies and promoting creativity and innovation among the members of her staff,” Dr. Gutmann added.

Ms. Doyle assumed the position of Vice President for University Communications at Penn in February 2001 after serving as Vice President of External Affairs for American Water Works Company, Inc. From 1992 to 2000, she served as Chief Public Affairs Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Prior to joining Penn, she managed the Philadelphia office of Golin Harris Communications, Inc., one of the top ten public relations firms in the country.

A search for Ms. Doyle’s successor will begin immediately. Gregory S. Rost, Vice President and Chief of Staff, will lead the search, which will be supported by an executive search firm. Ms. Doyle and Mr. Rost will work closely over the next few weeks to ensure a smooth transition. Phyllis Holtzman will serve Penn as Interim Vice President for University Communications until the position is filled.
