Botswana's Beautiful Bird by Barbara Barrick McKie

A reception will be held at the Burrison Gallery on Thursday, January 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. for the new exhibition. Fiber Revolution and the Kalahari Quilts are pleased to present their Botswana Collection exhibition at the Burrison Gallery. This collection started out as an exchange of culture between the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) regional group Fiber Revolution and the collective quilting group of women in Gaborone, Botswana. Fiber Revolution member Cindy Friedman accompanies her husband, Dr. Harvey Friedman, to Botswana several times a year. Dr. Friedman is an infectious disease physician at the University of Pennsylvania and is the director of the Botswana UPenn Partnership in Gaborone, Botswana.

While in Botswana, Mrs. Friedman met Jenny Healy, who organizes local women to create quilts for-profit under the name the Kalahari Quilts. Together they exhibited 18 quilts from Fiber Revolution along with a collection from Kalahari Quilts at the first ever exhibition of quilts in Botswana at the Botswanacraft Gallery in November of 2008. Two additional joint exhibitions have been held in 2009 and 2010.

The Kalahari quilters created nine quilts which feature African motifs to accompany the Fiber Revolution quilts inspired by Africa. The combined Botswana Collection is now touring the US.
