International Institutional Initiatives

November 16, 2010, Volume 57, No. 12

Eric Kaplan, associate secretary of the University, joined Development and Alumni Relations effective November 8 in the new role of senior director of Development and Alumni Relations for International Institutional Initiatives.

John Zeller, vice president of Development and Alumni Relations, said, “Following a lengthy analysis of our expanding activities in international development and alumni relations, we determined the need to create a senior position to work with partners across the institution and coordinate major international initiatives. Eric’s extensive and diverse knowledge of Penn, and particularly the strong institutional relationships he has formed throughout the schools and centers and with key leadership, will be valuable assets as DAR intensifies its efforts in development and alumni engagement around the globe. He will work closely with the President’s and Provost’s Offices, the Office of International Programs, and our schools and centers to leverage DAR programs for the benefit of the University.”

Dr. Kaplan began his Penn career as regional director of Admissions in 1994, and served as associate dean of Admissions before becoming director of Admissions in 2000. In 2003, he was named dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Lehigh University.

He returned to Penn in 2006 as associate secretary of the University, where he oversaw the daily operations of the Office of the Secretary. Under his guidance, the Office of the Secretary participated in a restructuring effort that has enhanced operational efficiency and improved constituency service. In addition to serving as the principal liaison to the President’s Office, he managed many aspects of the University’s relationships with Trustees, and worked closely with several Overseer Boards, University committees and DAR staff. Dr. Kaplan spent the 2007-2008 academic year as Penn’s Interim Dean of Admissions.

Dr. Kaplan holds a BA in psychology from Connecticut College, an EdM from Harvard University in administration, planning, and social policy, and earned his doctorate in higher education management from Penn in 2010. Prior to Penn he worked in admissions and financial aid at Westbrook College (Portland, ME), Boston University, and Brandeis University.
