Improve your skills and get ahead in your career by taking advantage of the many development opportunities provided by Human Resources. Essentials of Management; begins September 14; multiple dates with varying times; $250. A successful manager knows how to create and maintain a positive work environment. But it calls for continuous learning and honing of skills. If you’re a Penn manager, this program is for you. Learn the most effective management skills as well as the Penn policies necessary for a successful and productive workplace. You’ll be part of a cohort of fellow managers who can provide invaluable peer experience and support. This program is offered over a five-month period and requires approximately 30 hours of participation. All participants have the opportunity to complete a 360-degree assessment instrument and interpret those results with an executive coach.

Brown Bag Matinee—Conflict Resolution: A Win-Win Approach; September 15; noon–1 p.m.; free. Addressing conflict in the workplace helps to prevent unproductive behaviors such as resentment, displacement, and defensiveness. This video will help you find win-win solutions to solving problems and improving morale. You’ll learn about causes of conflict in the workplace, how to resolve them, and how to communicate effectively.

Career Focus Brown Bag—Growing in Place; September 21; noon–1 p.m.; free. This workshop will teach you strategies for capitalizing on the opportunities available to you in your current job. You’ll learn about ways to grow on the job so you don’t outgrow the job, how to set goals for yourself in your current role, how to work with your manager to utilize all of your skills, and when and why to consider lateral moves.

Franklin Covey’s FOCUS; September 23; 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; $75. It’s easy to get caught up in life’s hectic pace. Every e-mail, ringing phone, and interruption becomes the priority when you don’t have a clear plan for the day. Wouldn’t you rather spend more time on the tasks that matter most? If so, we have the workshop for you. Franklin Covey’s FOCUS will teach you how to be more focused, better organized and more productive in your personal and professional life. You’ll leave with a better understanding of your most important goals and how to achieve them.

Quality of Worklife Workshops

Dealing with the demands of work and your personal life can be challenging. These free workshops, sponsored by Human Resources and led by experts from Penn’s Employee Assistance Program and Quality of Worklife Department, offer information and support for your personal and professional life challenges. Pre-registration is required. You are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch to the sessions. Handling the Difficult and Angry Customer; September 16; noon–1 p.m.; free. Learn how to prepare for, engage and cope with the demanding or difficult customer without responding to their anger and frustration.This workshop will teach you methods for positively responding to challenging customers in order to reach a successful resolution. 

Managing Up; September 30; noon–1 p.m.; free. Having a positive and productive work relationship with your supervisor is vital. This seminar will teach you how to manage yourself in such a way that promotes camaraderie between you and your supervisor. You’ll learn how to be assertive and how to communicate with your supervisor so he or she understands your work style and how to maximize your productivity.

Nutrition Workshops

If you’re like most people, you have plenty of questions about nutrition: What should I eat before and after a workout? How can I choose smarter, healthier foods at the grocery store or in a restaurant? Which vitamins should I be taking, if any? Get answers to these questions and more when you join Human Resources for an ongoing series of nutrition workshops. Eat This, Not That; September 21; noon–1 p.m.; free. Many of us are clueless when it comes to calories in the foods we eat. So how do you know which foods to incorporate in your diet and which ones to steer clear of? This workshop will teach you how to make smart choices when it comes to your favorite foods and still lose weight. You’ll learn how to spot the many dangerous nutritional traps that plague health-conscious consumers every day. The workshop will be led by Suzanne Smith, health promotion program administrator, Penn Human Resources, Quality of Worklife Department.

Pre-Tax Expense Account Deadlines

If you have a Pre-Tax Expense Account, remember that the IRS regulation known as “Use It or Lose It” means that you can’t keep a balance in your account forever. The final day on which you can incur eligible expenses for the 2009–10 plan year is September 15, 2010. You must submit claims for all expenses by September 30. Visit the Human Resources website at www.hr.upenn.edu/Benefits/PreTaxfor more information, including listings of eligible expenses and instructions on how to file a claim.
