Power Down 2009 is a University-wide initiative to reduce unnecessary energy consumption over Winter Break. Electrical devices contribute significantly to Penn’s carbon footprint, and many of these remain unnecessarily plugged into outlets, continuing to consume energy over the holiday weeks.
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to “Power Down and Unplug” their lights and appliances before leaving campus to help the University conserve energy and make progress toward its goal to reduce campus-wide energy use by five percent by September 2010. This initiative is part of the University’s Climate Action Plan www.upenn.edu/sustainability/cap.html, designed to help reduce Penn’s carbon emissions and improve campus sustainability.
What You Should Power Down and Unplug
• Holiday Lights and other Decorative Lights
• Lights and Lamps
• Computer Monitors
• Laptop Computers, Chargers
• Televisions
• Phone Chargers
• Toasters, Coffee Makers
• Microwaves
• Other Kitchen Appliances
• Clock Radios
• Computer Speakers
• Printers, Copiers, Scanners & Fax Machines
• DVD and CD Players
Staff and faculty must check with their Penn IT Local Support Provider to coordinate computer protocols for the winter break. In certain divisions & departments, the IT staff may be upgrading or modifying computer systems, and may need computers to be left on over the break. In all cases, however, monitors and peripherals must be turned off to save energy.
