A week of music-making for students entering grades 7-9 will take place July 13-17, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. World Cafe Live is launching this exploration of percussion, singing and creativity, rooted in world rhythms. SummerJam will be led by Alex Shaw, co-musical director, percussionist and lead vocalist for the ensemble Alô Brasil.
Participants will be immersed in making music—playing percussion instruments from around the world, singing in large and small ensembles and gaining experience in traditions from samba to hip-hop. But they’ll also be learning about the creative process—how to develop and test new ideas. The program will guide participants to work as a team and make connections between their own lives and the traditions of other cultures. The camp will culminate in a final sharing on the stage of World Cafe Live, combining students’ original work with the rhythms of Brazil, Africa and the Americas.
Experience with music is great, but is not a requirement. Tuition is $500; some financial aid is available to those who qualify. For more information and to register e-mail info@liveconnections.org or download the application from http://liveconnections.org/summerjam-register.pdf.
