William Alexander: Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

Dr. William Alexander has been named the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and assumed his new position this month.

Dr. Alexander brings more than 25 years of clinical experience to his new position, including extensive leadership and practice in university counseling settings. For the past decade, he has served as Deputy Director of CAPS at Penn, with responsibilities including supervision of clinical staff, outreach and liaison services, crisis management, and staff development. Previously, Dr. Alexander operated in private practice as a licensed psychologist, as well as holding several positions with family, university, and hospital counseling offices. Dr. Alexander holds a PhD in counseling psychology from Temple University.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to serve the Penn community as Director of CAPS,” Dr. Alexander remarked. “I am also very grateful that I approach this adventure in the company of such a talented and dedicated staff. They are the heart of CAPS’ success, and I am very proud to be part of their team.”

Vice Provost for University Life Dr. Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum, praised Dr. Alexander’s hiring. “Bill has been an integral part of CAPS’ operation for many years. I’m thrilled to have him assume this new responsibility, and I look forward to his exceptional leadership and vision to extend the reach and effectiveness of our mental health services to students.”

Associate Vice Provost for Health and Wellness Dr. Max King, also lauded Dr. Alexander, “There is no question that CAPS is an extraordinary resource to the Penn community and will continue to prosper under Bill’s leadership. Bill understands the needs of Penn students, and he has gained the confidence of Penn’s faculty and staff during his many years of service there.”

Counseling and Psychological Services provides professional psychological and psychiatric services to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who need support in fulfilling their academic, social, and personal objectives.
