Dr. Heisler, GSE

Dr. Richard Shelly Heisler, a retired lecturer in the Graduate School of Education, died of cancer on April 24. He was 88 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Heisler received three degrees from GSE including a bachelor’s degree, in 1941; a master’s degree, in 1944; and a doctorate, in 1961.

Dr. Heisler held various positions at GSE during his more than 25 year-career at Penn. In addition to his teaching duties as a lecturer, he served as an assistant to the Dean, business manager, research associate, and also held various positions in the Center for Field Studies. He retired from Penn in 1984. Previously, he taught science for 10 years at Souderton High School.

Dr. Heisler also did consulting work, evaluating the curriculum of various school districts. He co-authored several books with emeritus professor and former director of the Center for Field Studies, Dr. William B. Castetter, two of which are Appraising and Improving the Performance of School Administrative Personnel and Developing and Defending a Dissertation Proposal.

Dr. Heisler is survived by his cousins.
