Performance and Staff Development Program: Appraisals Due June 2
PDF
May 13, 2008, Volume 54, No. 33

Penn’s Performance and Staff Development Program is also known as the “performance appraisal process.” After all, annual performance appraisals are central to the task of establishing job responsibilities, evaluating the quality of the work being done, and setting goals for the next year. You can’t draw a map for the future if you don’t know where you stand right now!

This year, appraisals for all eligible regular staff should be completed and entered into the Performance Appraisal Database by Monday, June 2, 2008. Supervisors must complete appraisals for staff members receiving annual salary increases, in order to validate the level of increase awarded.

But the professional development process doesn’t have to end with the written performance appraisal. The formal structure of the Performance and Staff Development Program—which requires a face-to-face meeting to talk about issues that might otherwise be taken for granted as you go about your daily business—can help to create a productive, open, ongoing dialogue between staff and supervisors. Did you do a great job on a particular project last year? Talk about why things turned out so well, and how you can transfer that success to ongoing or future tasks! Is there a skill set you’d like a staff member under your supervision to improve? Penn offers a wide variety of professional education opportunities—check out the online Course Catalog at www.hr.upenn.edu/CourseCatalog and propose that he or she take a specific workshop. Identifying opportunities for professional development is a vital component of the appraisal process, so supervisors should also consider involving staff in projects or assignments that enhance or broaden their abilities.

Both staff and supervisors should take the time to visit the Human Resources website at www.hr.upenn.edu/StaffRelations/Performance, where you will find information on everything from how to prepare for an appraisal meeting to how to draft an effective staff development plan. Documents including the Self-Appraisal Worksheet and the acceptable formats for the Performance and Staff Development Plan are also located on this site. The Division of Human Resources is also available to answer questions, provide training and offer assistance with the Performance and Staff Development Program. Staff members and supervisors can contact Human Resources at (215) 898-6093.
