Dean’s Award for Excellence in Biomedical Graduate Student Training

The School of Medicine’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Biomedical Graduate Student Training—established in 1992—is presented this year to Dr. Steve DiNardo, professor of cell and developmental biology. Dr. DiNardo received his BA at Columbia in 1977 and his PhD at SUNY Stony Brook in 1983. He did his post-doctoral training in biochemistry and biophysics at USCF. Prior to joining Penn in 1998, he taught at Rockefeller University. His lab researches developmental patterning and stem cell behavior during Drosophila spermatogenesis. He is a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Group in Developmental Biology and has served as the admissions chair. He has trained 11 graduate students in his lab at Penn. He has also developed a seminar course, CAMB 620: Thematic Concepts in Developmental Biology, and has taught it since its inception in 2000. According to his peers and students, he has distinguished himself as one of the most admired and respected teachers and mentors of graduate students.
