Scott Poethig: Patricia M. Williams Term Chair in Biology

Dr. R. Scott Poethig has been named the Patricia M. Williams Term Chair in Biology. 

Dr. Poethig has been a member of the biology faculty since 1983 and is a former chair of the biology graduate group. His research focuses on genetic regulation of plant morphogenesis, the formation and differentiation of tissues and organs in plants. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, Development, Developmental Biology and The Plant Journal and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest federation of scientists and publisher of Science. He has also received the Botanical Society of America’s Pelton Award for contributions to experimental plant morphology and Penn’s Biology Department Teaching Award.

The chair was established by Paul C. Williams, W ’67, in honor of his mother. Mr. Williams is the managing director at Nuveen Investments, LLC, where he leads new product development for the firm’s complex of closed-end, exchange listed funds. He previously directed Nuveen’s municipal bond research and investment banking departments and served on the firm’s management committee. He is an Alumni Trustee, president of Penn Alumni and serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He has served on the School’s Biology Advisory Board and has provided support for the biology department’s technology program, term chairs and research grants for students.
