Helping to Rebuild New Orleans: Special Opportunity for Faculty and Staff

Habitat

In an extension of Penn’s commitment to the Katrina recovery effort, funding is available to send 25 Penn faculty and staff volunteers to help rebuild New Orleans.

The group of volunteers will go to New Orleans the week of June 2 to work on a Habitat for Humanity construction site for five days. New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) is leading an unprecedented rebuilding effort, as the largest homebuilder in New Orleans. In 2008, NOAHH plans on building hundreds of new homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes, all through the help of volunteers—most of whom have little or no previous experience in construction.

The trip will provide an opportunity for faculty and staff without special expertise or disaster training to assist in the rebuilding effort in one of the hardest hit areas in the Gulf—St. Bernard Parish.  Located to the southeast of New Orleans, St. Bernard suffered significant structural damage to 100% of its residential and commercial units. There will also be opportunities to meet, and work with, Penn alumni in New Orleans, as well as enjoy the local culture.

Faculty and staff who are considering volunteering have two ways to get additional information and application materials.

Attend an Open House: two sessions are scheduled:
Tuesday, March 25, noon-1:30 p.m. or 4:30-6 p.m.,
McNeil Center for Early American Studies, Lecture Hall,
3355 Woodland Walk
