March Volunteer Opportunities
March 4, 2008, Volume 54, No. 24

Dear Penn Community,

Each month, Penn Volunteers In Public Service posts a list of volunteer opportunities.  These opportunities are developed from the many requests we receive for partnerships and assistance from the local community.

The University community continues to work towards being good neighbors in our shared community.  We thank you for your overwhelming support and for your generosity. Please contact me via e-mail (sammapp@pobox.upenn.edu) to volunteer for any of the programs.

–Isabel Sampson-Mapp, Associate Director, Netter Center for Community Partnerships
Director, Penn Volunteers In Public Service

Penn VIPS Annual Penny Drive: Now through March 21. Each year, Penn VIPS hosts an annual change drive to benefit small local nonprofits in the surrounding area.  Last year, we donated approximately $1,000 to the House of Hugs to purchase linen and silverware for the newly opened women and children’s shelter. This year, the Dropsite Committee will identify an equally deserving area nonprofit to receive these special funds. Please take your change to the following drop sites:

Join the Penn VIPS Scholarship Committee! Help plan the 17th Annual Penn VIPS Scholarship Program where we select and honor outstanding students from Bartram, Parkway, Overbrook, University City, Sayre and West Philadelphia High Schools. Committee selects awardees, plans a reception to be held at the Sheraton Hotel and provides winners with up to $1,000 non-tuition scholarships. Planning is underway for the June 2008 program. Join us for this cause.

Replacing your used digital equipment?  Donate it to a worthy cause. The West Philadelphia High School Community Center is trying to start a communications club, in which students will be able to create a newspaper, web page, blog, or podcast.  They need your donations of and not limited to digital cameras, digital recorders, computers, printers, etc.

Philadelphia Youth Network is recruiting mentors for their Business Mentoring Youth program. Their goal is to place 150 youth in Business Mentoring Youth experiences. To date, they have placements for 79 youth. Business Mentoring Youth (BMY) is a work-based mentoring program for students in Philadelphia high schools. The program, which is an integral component of WorkReady Philadelphia, provides high school students with first-hand exposure to the working world and an understanding of how school is connected to career success.

There is still time to sign up!  Please register at www.philamentor.com.
