Thousands of members of the Penn community —including students, alumni, faculty, staff and their families—gathered on campus Saturday evening for the Celebration on the Green to kick-off Making
History, the University’s largest ever fund-raising campaign. President Amy Gutmann
welcomed everyone to “Penn’s Moment” and
announced the campaign goal of $3.5 billion. She was joined on stage by Trustees Chairman James Riepe and Campaign Chairman George Weiss; they presented the campaign video featuring Penn students, faculty and alumni which was shown on a huge screen in front of the Van Pelt Library.
The Penn Band was the first of the
student groups to perform. They were followed by Penn’s award-winning jazz and pop a cappella group Counterparts, and then the energetic group African Rhythms—a coed music and dance troupe based on African traditions—got things jumping as their percussionists kept the beat. Dhamaka, Penn’s all-male South Asian dance troupe, Off the Beat, Penn’s coed contempoary
a cappella group, and Strictly Funk, a hip-hop and jazz fusion dance group kept the crowd energized. The Celebration on the Green ended with a sound and laser light show and the singing of The Red and the Blue.
