Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative
October 2, 2007, Volume 54, No. 6

The Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI), a program of Penn’s Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships, was endowed in June through a generous gift from Penn parents, Arthur and Sari Agatston, developers of the South Beach Diet, and has been named in their honor.

The Initiative addresses the interrelated problems of poor nutrition, obesity and diet-related disease among youth through programs in the city schools that provide students  hands-on experiences growing, tasting, cooking and selling healthy foods that follow USDA guidelines. This summer, AUNI was recognized as the best year-round YouthWorks program by Work Ready Philadelphia for its projects that work to improve community food systems (see Honors).

Dr. Arthur Agatston is the author of the South Beach Diet and a practicing cardiologist. Sari Agatston is an attorney and runs the South Beach Diet business.

The endowed gift will be used to support the operations of the Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative, including programming, compensation, research expenses, course development and equipment.
