Dear Penn Community,

Thank you very much for your donations to the Penn Volunteers In Public Service Annual Change Drive which benefited Women’s House of HUGS (Healing Under Grace & Safety) located on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. We collected $590.40 for the agency.

Be part of one of the most exciting days in Philadelphia.  Volunteer for the Mayoral Primary. Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to perform community service in the surrounding community. Contact me at sammapp@pobox.upenn.edu for additional information.

Penn Relays. Volunteer to help out at the Penn Relays. Our Distance Classic, 20K, 5K & 1 Mile Kids’ Fun Run will be held on Sunday, April 22. We will need people starting at 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. to work registration, setting up and manning water stations and cutting up fruit and bagels for the runners at the end of the race. During Relay week (location: The Palestra) volunteers for registration need to get competitors’ badges to the coaches of high school and college teams.

Wednesday, April 25–10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday, April 26–7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday, April 27–7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, April 28–7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be a meeting in a couple of weeks prior to the event for people to sign up for available hours. Many of the helpers after the registration hours go out to the track to help wherever needed.

West Philadelphia Chidren’s Festival. Volunteer at the Fourth Annual West Philadelphia Children’s Festival! This year’s festival will be held on April 22, in the ‘bowl’ of Clark Park on 43rd and Chester Ave.  After three years, the Festival has grown into an well-anticipated event, with over 200 children attending last year. With all of your help in the past we have been able to provide an important service for the West Philadelphia community. As always, we anticipate volunteers from the Penn Medical, Dental, Nursing, and Veterinary schools, as well as local performers, and plenty of free healthy snacks and games.

Election Day. Do you want to be a part of one of the most exciting days in Philadelphia this year?  Penn and the Committee of Seventy invite you to participate in our well-established, non-partisan Election Day Program on Tuesday, May 15. Volunteer Opportunities on Election Day:

Election Watchdog:  You and a partner will visit polling places where you will provide information to election officials as needed, answer questions voters might have and settle minor disputes.

Data Collector:  Survey departing voters about their experience to help prevent misconduct and identify opportunities to make voting in Philadelphia more user-friendly.

Hotline Helper:  Answer calls from voters, providing non-partisan voting information, document reports of misconduct, dispatch field teams and track voter and field team reports.

All volunteers will receive a 45-minute training session where they will learn everything they need to know about volunteering on Election Day. To sign-up  visit us at www.seventy.org/joinus/volunteer.html  and submit the online registration form. Be sure to specify “Penn” in response to the question “How did you hear about Seventy?”  If you have any questions about volunteering with Penn and the Committee of Seventy, please contact Briana Niblick at niblickb@pobox.upenn.edu or at (215) 898-4831.
