Resolving Workplace Conflicts
In an environment where diversity, teamwork, opportunity, change, stress and complexity are part of daily business, conflict is inevitable—and normal. Misunderstandings and disagreements can damage working relationships and make it difficult to work effectively. So, what can you do to resolve any workplace issues that may arise? Open communication should be your first step, whenever possible. For more difficult situations, take advantage of the following staff resources:
Workplace Issue Resolution Program: encourages staff to proactively find a solution for workplace issues, with an emphasis on open and constructive communication. See www.hr.upenn.edu/staffrelations/resolution.
Staff Grievance Procedure–a process designed to provide a fair and equitable resolution for concerns related to terms or conditions of employment. See www.hr.upenn.edu/policy/policies/620.asp.
Addressing conflict in productive ways helps create and maintain a working environment that’s positive, supportive, and effective.
