    Thursday, December 1, 5-6 p.m. (Holiday Shopping) and 6 p.m. (Program)

    Holiday Evening Program: Magnificent Objects

Crystal Ball Crystal Ball on Silver Stand from China. Qing Dynasty (A.D. 1644-1911). Quartz crystal, silver. Diameter of ball: 10 in. Photo courtesy of Penn Museum.

Since its founding in 1887, Penn Museum has explored sites the world over, assembling collections of objects that provide telling clues about past and present human cultures. Penn Museum curators and staff present their favorite objects, some of which have never been on display, from the Museum’s rich and varied collection. $10 non-members; $5 members; free for members at the Expedition Circle level and above.  (Note: The Main Shop and Pyramid Shop are open from 5 to 6 p.m., with a 20% discount for Museum members and a 10% discount for the public.)  This event will take place in the Lower Egypt Gallery. For registration and more information: (215) 898-4890.

    Thursday through Sunday, December 1-4

    Holiday Shopping Days: Express Yourself!

Penn Museum’s three shops–the Museum Shop, the Second Site shop and the Pyramid Shop for children–stocked for the holidays with a wide assortment of gift possibilities from around the world–offer four days of special discounts and special activities, with a focus on self-expression and body adornment. Each day, the shops host special artists, offering opportunities to experience mehndi (the art of body painting with henna) and learn about tattooing, watch a bead-making artist at work, and meet with jewelry vendors participating in a “trunk show” of their art. Distinctive face-painting is available for kids and the young-at-heart in the Pyramid Shop.  A complete schedule of the special artists and activities is available online: www.museum.upenn.edu.

In addition to the extra fun, the shops offer a 10% holiday discount, December 1-4.  Penn Museum members receive a 20% discount, and shop staff can sign up new members right at the register!   A 15% discount will be offered to those with a PennCard, HUP or CHOP ID. For more information on Holiday Shopping Days, call the Museum Shop at (215) 898-4040, or the Pyramid Shop at (215) 898-2626.

    Sunday, December 4, 1:30-4:30 p.m.

World Culture Family Afternoon: 10th Annual Peace Around the World

“Gratitude and Giving” is the theme of this year’s free annual holiday family celebration featuring international entertainment with a special focus on children at home and around the world.   In many cultures, winter holidays usher in a time for gratitude and for generosity–and a time to remember those less fortunate.  Craft workshops, storytelling, dancing and children’s choral music ring in the season. The Museum Shop and Pyramid Shop for children offer holiday discount specials. Information: (215) 898-4890.
