Death

Dr. Frederick V. Brutcher, Chemistry

Dr. Frederick V. Brutcher, Jr., associate professor of chemistry emeritus, died June 14 in Haverford, PA at the age of 82.

A native of Mansfield, Massachusetts, Dr. Brutcher received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts in 1947 and received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1951.

Earlier he had served over three years in the U.S. Army in the chemical warfare service and in the infantry as a Second Lieutenant. After WWII, he taught at the University of Okinawa’s chemistry department.

In 1953 Dr. Brutcher came to Penn as an assistant professor of chemistry. He was promoted to associate professor in 1960. Here, with Theodore Roberts and Nancy Pearson, he conformationally analyzed cyclopentane. Later, with William Bauer, Eric Leopold and R.C. Lugar, ring D of the steroids and alkyl cyclopentanes were analyzed with physical data and mathematical techniques. He taught organic chemistry to graduate students  for 35 years, until gaining emeritus status in 1988. He continued to work on simplifying conformational mathematics.

Dr. Brutcher is survived by two cousins, Carol N. Shaw and Nancy C. Reks.
