School of Social Policy & Practice Associate Dean:
Ram Cnaan

Dr. Richard Gelles, Dean of the School of Social Policy & Practice, announced the appointment of Dr. Ram A. Cnaan as the Associate Dean for Research/Director of the Doctoral Program in Social Welfare. In his new capacity, Dr. Cnaan will oversee both the doctoral program in social welfare and the research activities of the school, including research centers and programs.

Dr. Cnaan received his Ph.D. in social work from the University of Pittsburgh after graduating cum laude in both his BSW and MSW degrees. He  came to Penn as a visiting assistant professor in the School of Social Work and joined the standing faculty as an associate professor in 1989. He has been director of programs of the Programs in the Study of Organized Religion and Social Policy Research 2000 and has chaired the doctoral program in Social Welfare since 2004. His areas of interest and research include volunteerism and social work and religion. Dr. Cnaan has published numerous articles in scientific journals on a variety of social issues and is the author of the books, The Newer Deal: Social Work and Religion in Partnership (Columbia University Press) and The Invisible Caring Hand: American Congregations and the Provision of Welfare (New York University Press). His current project focuses on congregations in our society and is provisionally titled: The Other Philadelphia Story: How Local Congregations Support Quality of Life in Urban America.

Dean Gelles, in announcing the appointment, said, “As we move into a new and exciting era in the school’s history, with a new name and new degree programs, it is important to continue to place emphasis on doctoral education, research, and scholarship. Dr. Cnaan’s appointment signals a stepped-up commitment to doctoral education and research and will assure that the school retains its position as one of the nation’s most productive and influential social work and social policy programs.”
