May Volunteer Opportunities

Dear Penn Community,

Many of you volunteered to “adopt” a Philadelphia school student for the Take Your Daughters/Sons To Work Day, the Penn Relays, the International Children’s Festival and the Youth Golf and Academic Program.  Your continued support is impressive.

Following, is our monthly posting of community service opportunities. Penn Volunteers In Public Service (Penn VIPS) continues to post a monthly list of volunteer opportunities for your convenience. This list represents the many requests we get from the surrounding community for assistance/partnerships. Contact me  at (215) 898-2020 or sammapp@pobox.upenn.edu for additional information.

2nd Annual Philadelphia Asthma Walk Saturday, May 14

Rochelle Crenshaw-Nicholson from the Wharton School is a Team Captain for the American Lung Association in Philadelphia’s Asthma Walk on May 14. Join her in supporting asthma research and local educational and outreach programs to raise awareness about the asthma epidemic in Pennsylvania and have a great time, too! Why should you walk with her? Because dollars raised from this event help the American Lung Association “blow the whistle” three mile walk on asthma by: Helping the estimated 20 million Americans who currently have asthma. Raising funds for important research and programs that will help find better treatments for the thousands of people living with asthma in Philadelphia. Reducing the soaring economic costs of asthma. Please join her with your co-workers, family and friends for the Asthma Walk. Signing up and raising money is easy. Everything you need to get started is provided.

Computers Needed!

Is your department upgrading its computers?  Would you like to donate your used computers to a worthy cause? The Center for Community Partnerships and a group of volunteers are working to provide computers to West Philadelphia schools, churches, families and nonprofit agencies. Join us by donating your used computers to this cause. Visit our website at:  www.upenn.edu/ccp/computerdonations.

Volunteer at the Philadelphia International Children’s Festival!

The Annenberg Center needs volunteer help for the Philadelphia International Children’s Festival, Sunday, May 1 though Saturday, May 7.  The volunteers will use their talents in all areas of the Festival:  theater ushers, Playworks—arts, crafts and games.  We have positions for gift shop, artist hospitality, ushering, and PlayWorks. They are looking for people Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m -3 p.m.

Camp Jabberwocky: Martha’s Vineyard Cerebral Palsy Camp needs volunteers!

Camp Jabberwocky is an overnight camp on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. The camp is run for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities and runs from the end of July to the end of August. Jabberwocky serves 30 campers each week, with a staff of 25 volunteers who receive no formal pay but who do receive free room and board while living at camp. Jabberwocky is looking for counselors who can devote some or most of August to working with an amazing group of campers and counselors. While we prefer counselors to come for a month, they may be able to come for one, two or three weeks. Counselors are responsible for the care of their camper, running activities, and general service to the camp as a whole. A daily schedule includes breakfast, music class, activities  (pottery, jewelry making, basketball, yoga, painting, baseball), lunch, the beach, dinner and an evening activity (going to concerts, drumming cookouts on the beach, dances). Days are full, but filled with great joy and an inordinate amount of laughter. Working at camp is a truly unique experience. Experience working with special needs children is not necessary; orientation will be held prior to the start of camp, and most people have no experience before coming to camp.

Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia needs volunteers for SuperGreeters Program.

SuperGreeters assist patients and visitors by creating a welcoming environment, showing them to their destinations and escorting them if necessary. Also, if you can volunteer 3 hours a week, there are many more volunteer activities available. Mercy Hospital is located at 501 South 54th Street.
