Death
Adele Foster, Dining Services
Adele Foster, a Dining Services worker, died suddenly on April 17 at the age of 58. She worked for Dining Services at 1920 Commons Dining Commons for 30 years until she went on long-term disability in September 2002.
“Ms. Foster was born with a mental handicap and served her entire career as a dining services worker and though productive and diligent she required the support of a beneficent employer, a cooperative labor union (AFSME) and supportive management. Her job involved working with and for Penn students with daily interface. During her career she befriended hundreds of students and co-workers. She cared for people with whom she interfaced, remembering birthdays of colleagues and their children. When she became physically disabled in 2002 she was supported by the human resources network at the University and lived in JCHAI House in Wynnewood until her passing,” said Don Jacobs, the former Director of Dining Services who later served as the Executive Director of Hospitality Services before retiring.
“Ms. Foster lived and died as a role model for the right to a functional life for every individual. She was on a field trip with her group the day before she died and passed away on the way to the hospital having enjoyed a truly functional life,” Mr. Jacobs added.
Ms. Foster is predeceased by her parents Mildred and Bernard Foster. Mildred was formerly employed by the department of human services at Penn.
