Dr. Alan Charles Kors, professor of history, has been named the inaugural George H. Walker Endowed Term Professor of History, SAS Dean Samuel H. Preston has announced.

Dr.  Kors has been teaching courses on European intellectual history at Penn for more than 35 years and has received numerous honors for his commitment to teaching excellence. In addition to being recognized with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback and the Ira Abrams Memorial Distinguished Teaching Awards, he also received a faculty award from the Friars Senior Society.

Dr. Kors’s books include D’Holbach’s Coterie: An Enlightenment in Paris; Atheism in France, 1650-1729: The Orthodox Sources of Disbelief; and Anticipations of the Enlightenment in England, France, and Germany. More recently, he was editor in chief of the four-volume OxfordEncyclopedia of the Enlightenment, a comprehensive reference guide that includes nearly 700 articles. He has published courses in audio and visual media on The Birth of the Modern Mind and on Voltaire: The Mind of the Enlightenment.

As a longtime advocate for academic freedom, Dr. Kors helped to found the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonprofit foundation that "seeks to restore liberty to college campuses." He now serves as pro bono chairman of FIRE and is a member of the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy’s Academic Advisory Committee. In 1998, Dr. Kors co-authored The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America’s Campuses with Harvey Silverglate. His contributions earned him the Engalitcheff Award for the Defense of Academic Freedom, among several similar awards.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at Princeton, he went on to earn both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Harvard.

This chair was endowed in 2003 by George H. Walker IV, C ’91, W ’91, WG ’92, to recognize a preeminent scholar and teacher in the department of history. Mr. Walker serves as managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Company, where he leads the company’s alternative investment strategies.  He is also a member of the SAS Board of Overseers.
