alumnus and longtime trustee
made history with his
announcement of $120
million gift to Penn--the
largest gift ever given
to Penn and the largest
cash gift ever made to
a university.
7/13/93--The
transformation of PennMed
into the University of
Pennsylvania Health System
(UPHS).
7/13/93--The
campus bid farewell to
President Sheldon Hackney,
Provost Michael Aiken,
and Senior Vice President
Rick Nahm.

7/12/83--Trustees
passed a resolution to
name the GSFA building
after President Emeritus
Martin Meyerson and unveiled
a portrait of him.
7/12/83--The
Trustees adopted Building
Penn's Future, the
Development report which
targeted five core areas:
endowed professorships,
research and scholarly
resources, student financial
assistance, campus life
facilities and selective
innovation.

July
1973--James O. Freedman,
professor of law, was
appointed Ombudsman, succeeding
Penn's first Ombudsman
Dr. Joel Connarroe who
had been appointed in
1971.
July
1973--Seventy new lights
installed to illuminate
campus walks and buildings
with 19 more to be installed
in the Superblock area
by September.
July
1973--In order to conserve
electricity, the campus
community was encouraged
to "keep thermostats
as high in the summer
and as low in the winter
as comfort allows. It
is estimated that the
difference may be as much
as $50,000 per degree
per year at this University."
