Affirmative
Action Director: Jeanne Arnold
President
Judith Rodin has announced that Jeanne
Arnold has been appointed Executive
Director for the Office
of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity
Programs.
Ms.
Arnold succeeds Valerie Hayes, who left
Penn to become Director of the Equal Opportunity
Office and Special Advisor to the Provost
at Yale University.
"In
her new position, Jeanne will continue
the University's strategic goals of strengthening
and appreciating the diversity of its
communities through its educational, investigative,
advisory and compliance roles," said
President Rodin.
Ms.
Arnold brings to the Office of Affirmative
Action and Equal Opportunity Programs
a wealth of experience in issues relating
to cultural diversity. No stranger to
Penn, she has served as Director of the
African-American Resource Center for the
last eight years, where she oversaw the
development and implementation of advocacy,
counseling, consultation and program initiatives,
with a special emphasis on the resolution
of workplace issues. She has provided
invaluable advice to the President, Provost
and Executive Vice President on a variety
of issues and has served as a mediator
with faculty, staff and students. A graduate
of Penn's School of Social Work, Ms. Arnold
currently holds an adjunct faculty appointment
in the school.
Prior
to joining Penn, Ms. Arnold served as
both Director of Human Resources and Community
Relations and Director of Center Services
for the Crime Prevention Association.
There she fostered excellent community
relations through work with center advisory
councils and collaboration with agencies
and served as liaison to the United Way
and the Personnel Committee of the agency's
Board of Directors. Ms. Arnold has also
worked as Chief of Services for the Navy
Family Services Centers in Hampton Roads,
where she supervised eight departments
and planned and implemented marketing
and quality control strategies.
Ms.
Arnold's professional accomplishments
are complemented by her dedication to
the community. In addition to many years
of experience as a social worker, Ms.
Arnold has served on several community
boards, including the Association of Black
Women in Higher Education, St. Mary's
Family Respite Center Board, and the Episcopal
Community Services Board.
Ms.
Arnold will assume her position June 9
to allow for a smooth transition. A search
for her replacement as the Director of
the University's African-American Resource
Center will commence immediately.
