Administrative
Director of
College Houses: Dr. Delauter
Dr.
Leslie J. Delauter, the House Dean of Harnwell College House,
has been selected to be the administrative director of College
Houses. This summer, she will join Dr. Philip Nichols, the newly
appointed faculty director of College Houses, in providing leadership
and oversight to central CHAS staff and the House Deans. Dr. Delauter
and Dr. Nichols will work closely with the Residential Faculty
Council, chaired by Dr. Mark Liberman, and Deputy Provost Peter
Conn.
Dr.
Delauter, one of the founders of the College House program which
began in 1998, came to Penn after earning her Ph.D. at U.C. Berkeley
in 19th century American Literature. She taught at both Berkeley
and Swarthmore College before coming to Penn, where she did curatorial
work in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Van Pelt before
becoming a House Dean. At Harnwell, Dr. Delauter "dedicated countless
hours to the enrichment of a large and diverse community." She
established a series of performing arts programs that showcased
faculty and student talent as well as professional musicians such
as the California Guitar Trio, the Cassatt Quartet, and Peache
Jarman. Dr. Delauter has been the principal academic advisor
for nearly 40 students while hiring, training and managing a team
of 28 RAs, GAs and managers. Her greatest achievements, she notes,
have been "learning as many of the names as possible" of her 730
student neighbors and the creation of an "organic community, one
that will perpetuate itself" long after she leaves.
"Leslie
brings enormous talent and experience to this position," said
Dr. Conn. "I have been consistently impressed with her creativity,
enthusiasm, and leadership. She brings a wealth of ideas on how
we can enhance the College Houses in the years ahead."
