Development: Linda Dalch
The Wharton
School's Associate Dean for External Affairs, Steven Oliveira,
has announced the appointment of a new Executive Director of Development,
Linda N. Dalch.
Ms. Dalch is responsible
for the management of the School's development office and for
directing the activities of the Campaign for Sustained Leadership,
Wharton's $425-million fund-raising initiative. Ms.
Dalch will work closely with Mr. Oliveira in developing and implementing
the strategy to bring the Campaign for Sustained Leadership to
a successful conclusion and in building a strong, long-term development
operation for Wharton's post-campaign era.
"Ms. Dalch's
expertise and leadership skills will be a great addition to the
External Affairs Office. She brings excellent fund-raising, leadership,
and management experience to our organization. Her capable direction
will help ensure the successful completion of the Campaign for
Sustained Leadership," said Mr. Oliveira.
The international
launch of the Campaign took place in 2000. The Campaign has raised
over $357-million for five strategic initiatives: facilities,
faculty support, academic programs, student financial aid, and
unrestricted support for the Wharton School. The Campaign is the
first fund-raising initiative conducted solely to support the
Wharton School.
Ms. Dalch served
most recently as the President of the Virginia Foundation for
Independent Colleges (VFIC) in Richmond. Under her leadership,
VFIC has exceeded all prior fund-raising records for the foundation.
She also served as President of Tek.Xam, a unique information
technology exam used nationally that certifies problem-solving
and technology skills for liberal arts students.
Prior to VFIC,
Ms. Dalch served as the Director of Leadership Gifts at the Darden
School at the University of Virginia where she developed, implemented,
and managed regional campaigns for the Campaign for Darden as
well as a program for training and managing volunteers.
She also served as
Director of Development for the Virginia Commonwealth University
School of Business where she established the School's first development
office and directed its first capital campaign.

Leaving
Du Bois College House
After eight years
as the Faculty Master of W.E.B. Du Bois College House, Dr. Howard
C. Stevenson, Jr., will step down at the end of this semester
to undertake two major research projects. Dr. Stevenson is currently
an associate professor with tenure in the School, Community, and
Clinical Child Psychology Program at Penn.
Dr. Stevenson
has received two NIMH Research Awards. One project, called PLAAY
(Preventing Long-term Anger and Aggression in Youth), involves
reducing anger and aggression in teenage males through cultural
socialization and athletic movement (basketball and martial arts).
The second, called SAAS (Success of African American Students),
involves understanding and promoting the successful academic and
emotional experiences of African American students in independent
schools. Dr. Stevenson is also working toward completing a book
on the PLAAY project, If We Must Die: Appreciating the Coping
Anger of Black Male Youth through Cultural Socialization and Athletic
Movement, to be edited by Dr. Stevenson and published by Greenwood
Publishing, Praeger: Westport, CT.
Director
of College Houses, Dr. David Brownlee, noted, "Under Howard's
leadership, Du Bois has been an exemplary College House. It is
an active, intelligent community of teaching and learning, imbued
with the kindness and integrity that are his own sterling virtues.
In the title of a recent article, Dr. Stevenson quoted the African
aphorism It takes a village [to raise a child].' Du Bois
adopted this as its House motto in 1994. It is more than a slogan;
Howard made Du Bois a special, academic village.
