John
Smolen, Jr., University Life
John J. Smolen,
Jr., associate vice provost for University Life, died on September
28, at the age of 59.
Mr. Smolen received
his bachelors and masters degrees in business from the University
of Hartford in 1964 and 1972 respectively. Before coming to Penn
he worked as the registrar for the University of Hartford from 1970-1975,
and was registrar at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1955
until 1981.
He joined Penn
in 1981 as registrar and in 1990 became IT senior director for student
information. He became associate vice provost for University Life
in 1990, a position he held until his death.
Mr. Smolen is survived
by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Tracey; sons Trevor and Kevin; three
grandchildren; his mother Alyce; and a sister.
