News in Brief

Three Suspects; Hearing Continued

Three suspects have been arrested and are being held without bail in the October 31 murder of Dr. Vladimir Sled'. Eugene Harrison of 5200 Arch Street was arrested on November 20 and supplied Philadelphia Police with information that led to the arrest the next evening of Yvette Steward of 4900 Reno Street and Bridget Black of 5100 Reno Street.

Maureen Rush, director of police operations at Penn, said that leads and tips began to come forth after ATM surveillance photos of Harrison were published and shown on television. Both women suspects reportedly gave confessions to the Philadelphia Police and they, along with Harrison, are charged with murder, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, possession of instrument of crime, conspiracy, aggravated assault, simple assault, and reckless endangering of another person.

A November 27 preliminary hearing was continued for assignment of counsel, according to UPPD Investigator Bill Danks. A hearing "for status only" will be held in the Criminal Justice Center on December 5, at which time a new date will be set for the preliminary hearing.

SpectaGuard: For Guards, Not Police

In response to inquiries--largely from off campus--about the University's selection of a single firm for security guards, a University spokesman notes that security guards are not University Police, and that the change does not affect the structure or reporting of Penn Police Officers.
